What is Kallmann syndrome?

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a type of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) — a condition that occurs due to a lack of sex hormone development. People with Kallmann syndrome experience absent or delayed puberty and a lack or loss of sense of smell (anosmia). In some cases, Kallmann syndrome can also affect patient’s mouth, ears, eyes, kidneys and heart. When a person has the characteristics of Kallmann syndrome without anosmia, it’s called normosmic idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nIHH).

Who does Kallmann syndrome affect?

Kallmann syndrome is a congenital condition, which means people are born with it. Statistically, the condition occurs in 1 out of every 30,000 males and 1 out of every 120,000 females.

How does Kallmann syndrome affect one’s body?

During typical development, our hypothalamus releases bursts of hormones during puberty called gonadotropin releasing hormone GnRH. This triggers our pituitary gland to produce hormones — and as a result, our gonads (testicles or ovaries) produce sperm and egg cells, respectively. Kallmann syndrome is due to genetic defects leading to the underdevelopment of GnRH production. As a result, puberty is delayed or absent.

Why does Kallmann syndrome have anosmia?

Research indicates that gene mutations associated with Kallmann syndrome affect olfactory (sense of smell) nerve cells in your brain. As a result, your sense of smell is impaired.

What are the symptoms of Kallmann syndrome?

There are several symptoms associated with Kallmann syndrome, and they can vary from person to person. Kallmann syndrome symptoms in children may include:

• A lack of breast development and menstrual periods in females at puberty.
• No development of sex characteristics in males at puberty, such as enlarged penis and testes, facial hair and deepening of their voice.
• Short stature (in some cases).

Ignatia Amara

PCO, menses, black, too early, too profuse, or scanty. Excoriation, especially around vagina and mouth. Feminine sexual frigidity. Suppression from grief. Jerking of limbs. Pain in tendo-Achilles and calf. Ulcerative pain in soles.

Lycopodium Clavatum

Lycopodium is adapted more especially to ailments gradually developing, functional power weakening, with failures of the digestive powers, disturbed liver function. Atony. Malnutrition. Mild temperaments of lymphatic constitution, with catarrhal tendencies; older persons, where the skin shows yellowish spots, earthy complexion, uric acid diathesis, etc. also precocious, weakly children.

Debility in morning. Marked regulating influence upon the glandular (sebaceous) secretions. Pre-senility. Ascites, in liver disease. Lycopodium patient is thin, withered, full of gas and dry. Pulsatilla Pratensis

Patient impudent, teasing, laugh at reprimands. Has a particular tendency to develop the skin phase of internal disorders. Eradicates tendency to erysipelas. Anemia with redness of face. Tendency to obesity.

Alumina

A very general condition corresponding to this drug is dryness of mucous membranes and skin, and tendency to paretic muscular states. Lack of vital heat, or prematurely old, with debility. Sluggish functions, heaviness, numbness, and staggering, and the characteristic constipation. Disposition to colds in the head, and eructation in spare, dry, thin subjects. Delicate patients, addicted to artificial/nonorganic foods.

Throbbing headaches, patient seems yellow. Tinnitus. ENT infections. Skin infections. Liver weakness. Severe constipation. Extremities thin while trunk fatty. Cancers. Tumors. Prostate cancer.

Silica Tera

Neurasthenic states, and increased susceptibility to nervous stimuli and exaggerated reflexes. Diseases of bones, caries and necrosis. Fibrotic conditions and scar-tissue. Tumors. Cancers. Organic changes in an organ. Periodical states; abscesses, quinsy, headaches, spasms, epilepsy. Keloid growth. Infections of ENT, of skin and bones/joints of GI, UTIs etc. PCODs and uterine infections.

Dulcamara

Causticum

Broken down senile. Weakness progresses until patient have gradually appeared paralysis. Local paralysis, vocal cords, muscles of deglutition, of tongue, eyelids, face, penile paralysis, urinary bladder, extremities etc. Children are slow to walk, to grow, abnormalities.

Urine involuntary when coughing, sneezing, expelled very slowly, and sometimes retained. Involuntary during first sleep at night; also. Urinates from slightest excitement. Retention after surgical operations. Loss of sensibility on passing urine. Menses cease at night, flow only during day. Leucorrhea at night, with great weakness. Menses delay, late.

Conium Maculatum

Desire increased; power decreased. Sexual nervousness, with feeble erection. Effects of suppressed sexual appetite. Testicles hard and enlarged. Dysmenorrhea, with drawing-down thighs. Mammae lax and shrunken, hard, painful to touch. Stitches in nipples. Wants to press breast hard with hand. Menses delayed and scanty, parts sensitive. Breasts enlarge and become painful before and during menses. Rash before menses. Itching around pudenda. Unready conception. Induration of os and cervix. Ovaritis; ovary enlarged, indurated; lancinating pain. Ill effects of repressed sexual desire or suppressed menses, or from excessive indulgence. Leucorrhea after micturition.

Arsenicum Album

A profoundly acting remedy on every organ and tissue. Debility, exhaustion, and restlessness, irritable weakness. Atrophy of organs. Anemia and chlorosis. Degenerative changes. Gradual loss of weight. Septic infections and low vitality. Skin infections, skin ulcers. UT infections. Joints and bone diseases. ENT infections. GIT infections. UTI and analyzation. Extremities. Ferrum Picricum

Is considered a great medicine to complete the action of other medicines. The symptom that specially calls for it is failure of the function of an organ under exertion; e g, the voice fails, delayed growth of sexual organs. Warts and epithelial growths; corns with yellowish discoloration. Senile hypertrophy of the prostate. Pseudo-leukemia. Locomotor ataxia, ocular stage. Hands covered with warts.

Deafness before menses. Crackling in ears and low-pitched voice. Vascular deafness. Dental neuralgia, radiating towards ears and eyes. Tinnitus.

Pain along entire urethra. Frequent micturition at night, with full feeling and pressure in rectum. Smarting at neck of bladder and penis. Retention of urine.

Natrum Sulphuricum

Melancholy, with periodical attacks of mania. Suicidal tendency. Occipital pain. Piercing stitches in ears. Vertigo; relieved by sweat on head. Bursting feeling on coughing. Hot feeling on top of head. ENT infection. Photophobia. Gallbladder infection. Diabetes. Herpetic uvulitis. Leucorrhea and other uterine infections and tumors. Lumbago. Bones and joints pains, infections.

Natrum Carbonicum

All the Natrum stimulate cellular activity and increase oxidation and metabolism. Uterine weakness, tumors and infections. Old sprains. Severe weakness of limbs. Easy dislocation and spraining of ankles. Joints diseases and infections.

Baryta Carbonica

Loss of memory, mental weakness. Irresolute. Vertigo; stitches, when standing in the sun, extending through head. Brain feels as if loose. Hair falls out. Confusion. Wens.

Trembling of the hand when writing. Tension in legs in genital organs, as if the tendons were too short. Inquietude and trembling in different organs, with paralytic weakness, or tension, as if from contraction of the tendons, in different parts/organs. Paralysis and palsy of aged persons. Shakings and starlings of some of the limbs, and of the whole body.

Argentum Nitricum

Addison’s disease. Cushing syndrome. Anemia. Chancre. Impotence. Genitals shrivel. Coition painful. Gastralgia at beginning of menses. Intense spasm of chest muscles. Organs at night.
