It’s typical to lose some hair every day as part of our hair’s usual growth cycle. For most people, the lost hair grows back, and we maintain a full head of hair. But illness, hormonal changes, stress, aging and inherited conditions can interfere with our hair’s growth cycle. More hair falls out, but new strands don’t always grow back.
Most healthy people lose up to 100 strands of hair per day. As part of our hair’s growth cycle, new strands grow and take the place of the ones we shed.
When you start to shed more strands — and fewer or none grow back — the condition is considered alopecia (hair loss). There are several types of hair loss, and it can affect adults of either sex or even children. You may lose hair just on your head or from your body as well.
What are the types of hair loss?
Some types of hair loss are permanent, while others are temporary. The most common types of hair loss include:
- Androgenic alopecia: This type of hereditary baldness can affect anyone (male pattern baldness or hair loss in women).
- Alopecia areata: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that results in hair loss from the head and body.
- Telogen effluvium: This type of hair loss involves rapid shedding of hair in a short amount of time. It typically happens a few months after your body goes through something physically or emotionally stressful. It can also result from sudden hormonal changes.

Baldness (androgenic alopecia) is the most common type of hair loss. Hair loss is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy.
Symptoms and Causes
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss has many possible causes. The most common include:
- Hereditary hair loss from genetic,
- Fungal infections on the scalp,
- Hairstyles that pull the hair tightly (such as braids, hair extensions or tight ponytails),
- Haircare that may cause damage due to processing (including perms and bleach),
- Hormonal changes (such as pregnancy, childbirth or menopause),

If your patient loses significant hair, it’s important to protect the scalp. To avoid the sweat advise wearing a hat, scarf or other head covering when he/she is in the hot working area. Sun exposure decreases the risk of skin cancer but increases the skin fungal infections (due to sweating/moist).
Diagnosis and Tests
How is hair loss diagnosed?
In some cases, the cause of hair loss is obvious — for example, if your patient losing hair while going through chemotherapy. Other times, good doctor will need to do some detective work to figure out what’s causing hair loss.
To determine the correct diagnosis, a doctor provider may:
- Ask about the family history, including if any relatives experienced hair loss and at what age,
- Look at patient’s medical history,
- Order blood tests to measure thyroid function and iron levels,
- Examine patient’s scalp for signs of infection,
- Take a scalp biopsy to check for skin disease (I – Dr Qaisar will not recommend).
Allopathic treatment
If your hair loss results from medication, hormonal imbalances, thyroid disease or diet, your provider will address the cause. Correcting the underlying problem is often all that’s needed to help stop hair loss.

Medications to treat hair loss
There are a lot of different hair loss treatment options available over the counter (OTC) or by prescription that you can apply to your hair at home. These products are usually topical and come in forms like a cream, lotion or shampoo.
Common ingredients in OTC hair loss treatment products include:
- Biotin.
- Zinc.
- Collagen.
- Azelaic acid.
- Oils like olive, sweet mustered oil, bitter mustered oil, tea tree oil (herbal treatment).
If over the counter (OTC) products aren’t working for your patient, recommend specific types of hair regrowth medications, for example:
- Minoxidil (Rogaine etc): treats pattern baldness. Minoxidil is a topical solution that patient rubs directly onto the scalp. It’s available OTC and doesn’t require a prescription.
- Oral medication (finasteride, or Propecia etc) are only for men (male pattern baldness).
- Finasteride (Propecia etc): treats pattern baldness. Finasteride isn’t recommended for women, but it’s approved for men to treat pattern baldness (due to its severe side effects).
- Corticosteroids: according to allopathic theory, steroids help treat sudden and extensive hair loss. It can slow the speed of hair loss and potentially help with hair regrowth which is not proved in any lab and/or in clinical practice.
Hair regrowth procedures
There are different types of hair regrowth procedures and hair transplant surgeries available:
- Grafting is a type of hair regrowth procedure where a surgeon will remove hair from part of patient’s body and transplant it to an area of patient’s scalp where he/she has baldness. Grafting is an outpatient procedure performed in the dermatologic surgeon’s office. It’s a painful procedure, which means patient will receive an anesthetic, so he/she won’t feel pain.
- Scalp reduction is the removal of non-hair-bearing skin from the scalp so the remaining hair-bearing skin can be stretched to fill in the bald area of patient’s head. Scalp reduction can reduce as much as half of the bald area. It’s a procedure performed to cover bald areas on the top and back of head. It’s not beneficial for the frontal hairline.
- Light therapy or low-level laser therapy uses medical-grade lights directed at the scalp for a short period of time to help regrow hair. Light therapy can stimulate the hair follicles in the skin to help hair grow. A patient may need several light therapy sessions before he/she sees results.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a procedure in which a healthcare provider draws blood from a vein in patient’s arm and then spins that blood in a centrifuge machine to separate the platelets from the blood plasma and inject the plasma back into patient’s body. PRP therapy is usually used to speed up body’s healing process after injury or surgery, but it can also help regrow your hair.
- Scalp micropigmentation is a type of tattoo, also known as a hair tattoo, which can cover bald spots or thinning hair without surgery.

Jaborandi (Pilocarpus)

SLECTION OF MEDICINE:
Phosphorus was selected as it got highest marks on repertorization and covered maximum rubrics in higher grades.
It has symptoms of hair fall in large bunches on forepart of head, and especially alopecia areata.
Calcarea Carbonica covers almost all the rubrics, but the grading was less than phosphorous.
Bryonia does not cover the chief complaint of the case (alopecia areata).
