Leucorrhea and Vaginal Candidiasis (Vaginal Yeast Infection), difference between them…
A normal vagaina is full of bacteria, most of them are harmless and fall into a category called lactobacilli, also known as the “good” kind of bacteria. The vagina also plays host to the anaerobes, and sometimes the anaerobes get too plentiful and throw off the balance, creating a situation called bacterial vaginosis.
Virginal candidiasis
Vaginal candidiasis, vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the vagina and the vulva (the tissues at the vaginal opening).
Bacterial vaginosis is a form of vaginitis/inflammation of the vagina. Vaginosis while pregnant can also cause infants to be born premature or underweight.
The exact cause of bacterial vaginosis is unknown and nor is it clear just how low lactobacilli levels need to be in order for an anaerobe surge to develop. What is known is that certain activities can increase the likelihood of developing bacterial vaginosis, including:
- Vaginal douching.
- Unprotected intercourse.
- Intercourse with multiple partners.
- Using antibiotics.
- Using any vaginally delivered medications.
Leucorrhea
Leukorrhea is the medical name for normal vaginal discharge. You may notice it in your underwear. It’s usually thick and sticky. It can be white or yellow, but it doesn’t cause itching, pain, burning or irritation of the tissue around the vaginal opening.
It’s hard sometimes to differentiate between leukorrhea and vaginal discharge caused from STIs or a yeast infection.
STIs means sexually transmitted diseases; STIs are spread predominantly by sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex. Some STIs can also be transmitted from mother-to-child during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
Etiology of leucorrhea
As leucorrhea is a symptom of various gynecological conditions, physiological as well as pathological, it is important to understand that the underlying factor in most of these conditions is congestion of the pelvic organs which inevitably results in an increased activity of the cervical, endometrial and vaginal epithelium to produce an excessive secretion. This excessive discharge may be physiological or pathological; infective or non- infective: –
The most common conditions, in which excess of this discharge is likely to be present, are pregnancy, premenstrual or menstrual periods, and congestion of the uterus.
Pathological conditions of the female genital, organs, e.g., infection, growths and displacements, etc., also produce the same phenomenon, i.e., congestion and leucorrhea.
Irritation due to mechanical factors, e.g., use of chemical contraceptives, pessaries, intrauterine devices, etc, may also establish chronic inflammatory process causing congestion and hence leucorrhea.
Psychogenic causes, e.g., worries, anxiety, overwork, and sexual excitement without fulfillment may also cause chronic leucorrhea.
Emotional upsets affect hypothalamus, which in turn upsets the gonadotrophic functions of the pituitary gland, so much so that even an ovulation has been caused by mental stress and emotional situations. Considering the close relationship between pituitary, ovarian functions, glycogen deposition and PH value of vaginal flora, the hormonal theory also seems to be a possible cause.
Recently, endocranial factors could be a possible cause of leucorrhea as is clear by the fact that the non-infective erosion is due to excess of estrogen in the system.
Pregnancy and menstrual periods are also examples of hyper-secretion due to large amounts of estrogen in the blood at those periods.
Bad diet, excessive use of stimulants, e.g., tea, coffee, alcohol, smoking, all these things can cause leucorrhea, because of the absorption of toxic substances or by stimulation the nervous mechanism of gland causing hormonal imbalance.
Faulty and deficient diet or severe Malabsorption apart from causing undernourishment and debility depresses the activity of pituitary gland producing hormonal disturbance, or a deficient diet may deprive the glands of raw material from which hormones are manufactured.
Finally, the constitutional cause of leucorrhea includes debilitated conditions due to anemia, tuberculosis, etc.
In an easier and more understandable way, the cause of leucorrhea has been described as under: –
General Causes
-
- Malnutrition.

Vaginal Candidiasis
A healthy vagina contains a normal balance of yeast and beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus. Vaginal Candidiasis is a fungal infection most often caused by a type of yeast called Candida Albicans. Some infections can result from other forms of Candida for example C. Albicans; It is most commonly found in the mouth, throat, and gut as well as the vagina. It commonly occurs as a superficial infection or on mucous membranes in the mouth, skin or vagina. Candida is the name given to a specific condition when there is an overgrowth of the yeast Candida Albicans in the body.
Source of Infection
Men can become infected after having sex with a woman that has an existing vaginal yeast infection, from touching the parts of the body that are commonly infected include the skin, genitals, throat, mouth, and blood.
Vaginal Candidiasis Symptoms
The classic symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection can be very uncomfortable, and include:
- Pain and soreness.
- Pain and/or Burning sensation during intercourse.
- Pain and burning sensation when urinating.
- Unusual vaginal discharge (thick and white with a cottage cheese appearance or thin and watery with bad smell).
- Itching and irritation near/around the vagina or vulva.

Most yeast infections are mild; but they can become severe.
Symptoms of a severe or complicated yeast infection are:
- Redness around the vulva.
- Swelling.
- Cracks in the vaginal wall.
- Vaginal rash.
