Impotency or Erectile Dysfunction may happen if any of the functions that make erection occur do not work or coordinate properly with the mind. The arteries to the penis are only 1 mm in diameter. They develop plaque and clog the circulation long before the 3-mm cardiac arteries.
It needs nervous system, muscles and blood vessels majorly to coordinate with each other. Having issue with any of them may cause impotency.
Here are some conditions that could affect erection process:
- Problem with blood vessels/blood flow
- Depression, Stress, Anxiety.
- Mood disorder.
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Hypertension (high blood pressure).
- Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
- Alcohol and tobacco use.
- Some allopathic drugs for example, antidepressants, pain killers, and high blood pressure allopathic drugs etc.
- Fatigue.
- Brain or spinal cord injuries.
- Hypogonadism (a condition that leads to low levels of the male hormone, testosterone).

How to prevent?
This depends on whether you know what it is causing your impotency or erectile dysfunction. There are some things you can do that may help prevent impotency, including:
- Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and drugs.
- Ask your doctor if erectile dysfunction is a side effect of a new or current medicine you are taking. The doctor will advise an alternative medicine.
- Control your blood sugar and blood pressure.
- Try to relax and avoid stress.
Allopathic treatment for Impotency
Allopathic treatment depends on what is causing impotency. If it is caused by uncontrolled blood sugar and high blood pressure, take your medicine and follow your doctor’s instructions.
If your doctor rules out other causes, he or she may prescribe Sildenafil (brand name: Viagra), tadalafil (brand name Cialis), and vardenafil (brand name Levitra). These medicines are taken by mouth to help one maintain an erection, but remember, root cause is still needing proper treatment.
Not everyone can use these medicines. A doctor should talk to patient about alprostadil if oral medicines aren’t an option for patient. Alprostadil is a synthetic version of prostaglandin E. It can be injected into the penis or inserted as a tiny suppository into the urethra.
Usual dose is, takes 1 tablet 30 minutes to 1 hour before he plans to have sex. Sildenafil works for 4-8 hours; vardenafil works for up to 8 hours; and tadalafil works for up to 36 hours. 
Patient should not take more than 1 tablet in 24 hours (Tadalafil and vardenafil come in tablets of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg. Sildenafil comes in tablets of 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg).
Even if patient take the medicine, he still needs physical and mental stimulation and desire to have a natural erection. If the first dose doesn’t help.
Keep in mind that there is not any proper and permanent treatment for erectile dysfunction in allopathy.
The side effects of impotency/erectile dysfunction allopathic medicine are mostly the same and are:
- Headache.
- Hypertension.
- Stroke.
- Flushing (face and upper body turning red and warm).
- Upset stomach.
- Runny nose.
- Vision changes (things look blue).
Tadalafil has the same side effects, except for the flushing and possible changes in vision. It can also cause back pain and muscle aches. For each of the medicines, hypertension and headache are the most common side effects. Vision changes are the least common.
Homeopathic Treatment for Impotency
Treating the condition of impotency needs to find out the cause. First of all, a physical examination and tests in order to confirm any cause(s)., for example diabetes, heart disease, tobacco, alcoholism and hormonal problems etc. could lead to erection problems.
The following medicine(s) could be advised according to patient’s individuality.

1. Agnus Castus: For absolute Impotency
Although various medicines are used to treat impotency or erectile dysfunction, it is Agnus Castus that is considered the top remedy.
Agnus Castus is used in cases where there is complete inability to attain erection. There may also be coldness of sexual organs, patient has mental aversion to indulge in sex, along with decreased physical strength, no desire for sex and/or nor the physical power to perform the sexual act, history of Gonorrhea.
2. Caladium: For Erectile Dysfunction despite Desire for Sex
Caladium is of great help for treatment of impotency when the man is unable to have an erection despite having a sexual desire or urge, the penis remains in a relaxed condition and there is no erection, depression, anxiety, craving for tobacco, teetotalers etc.
3. Selenium: For Weak and Slow Erection
Selenium is the best prescription when the erection is too weak and slow rather than the complete inability to have an erection, insufficient erection which will remains for a very short period, Irritability and excessive weakness after the sexual, involuntary emission, nocturnal emission, dribbling of semen while passing stool or poop.
4. Lycopodium: For Young and Old with Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction
Lycopodium is of great help for both young and elder’s suffering from impotency, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation.
The indication for use of Lycopodium in young men is impotency in result of excessive masturbation or increased indulgence in sexual activity.
In elderly people, Lycopodium is the remedy when the desire to indulge in a sexual act is present, but the erection is not adequate.
Note: Elderly men with imperfect erections may also have prostate enlargement.
5. Avena Sativa: For Enhancing Sexual Power
Avena Sativa can be used as a tonic for enhancing the sexual power in men. Avena Sativa will help in removing extreme exhaustion and deficient erections. Patients suffering from impotency/erectile dysfunction after overindulgence in sexual activity or masturbation need this medicine.
6. Tribulus Terrestris: For Urinary Troubles with Erectile Dysfunction
The main indication for using Tribulus Terrestris is the presence of urinary troubles along with impotency. The sexual organs are weak and sometimes pain while passing urine.
7. Nuphar Luteum: Where there is No Desire for Sex
Nuphar Luteum will be advised when there is no desire of sexual activity …. totally absent -impotence, no sexual desire with relaxed genitalia, seminal discharges during passing stool or poop and in some cases while passing urine.
8. Yohimbinum: For Increasing Sexual Desire
This medicine is an aphrodisiac that works as an agent to increase sexual desire. Yohimbinum is also the best remedy for Neurasthenic Impotency. The neurasthenic state covers various aspects like lack of interest in sexual activity, deficient erection, extreme weakness, irritability and sadness.
10. Acid Phos vrs Selenium: Inability to Maintain Erection
Acid Phos and Selenium can both help the males with impotency when the erections last only for a short time with early or premature emissions, due to Diabetes Mellitus impotency, extreme physical debility and mental exhaustion, relaxed genitals. In such cases, treatment with the intake of Acid Phos can be very beneficial.
Both these medicines can be used if men attempting the sexual act experience relaxation of the sex organs. However, if there is involuntary semen discharge during sleep or while passing stool or during short erections, then Selenium can be of great help.
11. Caladium vs. Lycopodium: For Impotency or Erectile Dysfunction with Tobacco Addiction
If you are suffering from impotency with tobacco addiction, Caladium and Lycopodium offer help. Here, these medicines will provide a dual positive effect. First, they will remove the tobacco craving and then they will raise the vigor of sexual ability. The males requiring either of these medicines have the sexual desire. But the difference is that to select Caladium, a complete absence of penis erection is the main complaint. For using Lycopodium, on the other hand, the complaint is insufficient erection.
12. Agnus Castus vs. Nuphar Luteum: To Increase Libido
Agnus Castus is the best medicine to increase the libido or the desire to have sex in males who have complete impotency and a marked aversion to sex.
While Nuphar Luteum can be used for exactly the same condition as in Agnus Castus. But the additional symptom which will help in picking Nuphar Luteum over Agnus Castus to increase the sexual desire is the involuntary semen discharge while passing stool or urine or while sleeping.
13. Sabal Serrulata: For Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction with Prostate Enlargement
Sabal Serrulata is the best medicine to treat decreased penile erections along with the enlargement of prostate gland. Urinary troubles like frequent passing of urine and difficulty in passing urine always accompany Erectile Dysfunction.

You may also be given nitrate drugs for heart disease, and other problems. Another medication used to treat impotence is prostaglandin E1 therapy. It can be self-injected or with help of suppository into the penis.
