What is a vaginal cyst?
A cyst on the vagina is a lump or bump filled with air, mucus, pus or other materials. Cysts on the vagina can be undetectable — as small as a pea — or as large as an orange. They are usually benign (non-cancerous) and may be painless or cause discomfort depending on their size and location.
Vaginal cysts are most common in people of reproductive age. However, one can still develop cysts through menopause.
Types of vaginal cysts
There are several different types of vaginal cysts:
- Inclusion cysts are one of the most common types of vaginal cysts. They are usually very small and located in the lower back of the vaginal wall.
- Bartholin’s gland cysts are fluid-filled cysts that form in the Bartholin’s glands. These glands sit on either side of the opening to the vagina and produce the fluid that lubricates the labia (vaginal lips).
- Gartner’s duct cysts occur when ducts in a developing embryo don’t disappear as they are supposed to after the baby is born. These remaining ducts can form vaginal cysts later in life.
- Müllerian cysts are another common type of vaginal cyst that form from structures left behind when a baby develops. These cysts can grow anywhere on the vaginal walls, and they often contain mucus.
- Sebaceous cysts: These are cysts that develop when oil-producing sebaceous glands of the vulva (external genitalia) become blocked. This will form a lump filled with a yellow-white, greasy material.
Common Causes of Vaginal Cysts
Vaginal cysts usually form when a gland or duct becomes clogged, causing liquid or another material to collect inside. The cause of a vaginal cyst depends on its type.
Inclusion cysts are caused by trauma to the vaginal walls. For example, women may get an inclusion cyst after they have an episiotomy (a surgical cut used to enlarge the vaginal opening during childbirth) or when they have surgery that damages the lining of the vagina.
Bartholin’s gland cysts are caused when the opening to the Bartholin’s gland becomes blocked, creating a fluid-filled growth. An abscess can result from a number of bacteria including those that cause sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. Bacteria normally found in the intestinal tract, such as E. coli, can also lead to Bartholin’s abscesses. They may also be caused by injury.
Symptoms of Vaginal Cysts
❣ Small, painless lump inside or near the vagina,
💓 Swelling or discomfort during sex or sitting (Bartholin’s gland and sebaceous cysts happen when a duct or gland becomes blocked or clogged, causing fluid, pus, oil, or other materials to collect and form a lump. These can become painful if infected),
💥 Pain & redness (if infected especially sexually transmitted diseases),
💦Pus or foul-smelling discharge (if abscess forms) {An inclusion, Gartner’s duct, or Müllerian vaginal cyst that forms from rips or tears during childbirth or from an injury to the vaginal wall during surgery. These types of cysts occur without you knowing}.
How are vaginal cysts diagnosed?
During a routine pelvic exam, you (the doctor) may feel the mass on the vaginal wall. Review patient’s medical history and ask what symptoms she has having. Also suggest additional tests to rule out other conditions for example:
- biopsy of a tissue sample from the cyst to rule out the possibility of vaginal cancer,
- tests on the secretions from the vagina or cervix to determine if a sexually transmitted infection (STI) is present,
- MRI scan, CT scan, or ultrasound to see detailed images of the cyst.
Allopathic treatment Options for vaginal cysts
Allopathic doctors may look at or touch the cyst. Cysts may be monitored over time for changes in size. Treatment approach will be based on the type and severity of cyst patient has.
- A sitz bath: Sit in a bathtub with a few inches of warm water several times a day. This can provide comfort and promote healing.
- Antibiotics: If your cyst becomes infected, your provider may prescribe antibiotics.
- Surgical draining: A small tube called a catheter will be inserted into the cyst to drain fluid. These are usually left in place for several weeks.
- Marsupialization: The cyst is surgically opened and drained. Then, the surgeon will stitch the edges of the cyst wall to form a permanent open pocket or “pouch” for continuous drainage,
- Warm sitz baths (soaking in warm water) to help drainage,
- Good hygiene to prevent infection,
- Avoid tight underwear.
Homeopathic medicines for Vaginal Cysts
According to Homeopathic theory, if there is any abnormality in body/organism, later or sooner it will be creating problems; that’s why it necessary to treat any disease and/or abnormality intime, Homeopathy did not allow to wait/watch/monitoring, cyst should be treated as soon as they diagnosed.
