Measles (rubeola virus, a paramyxovirus, genus Morbillivirus) is a highly contagious viral disease that can be fatal. In most people, the disease produces fever > 101 F (38.3 C), a generalized rash that lasts greater than 3 days, cough, runny nose (coryza), and red eyes (conjunctivitis). The complications of measles that result in most deaths include pneumonia and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads easily from person to person, especially in those without immune to. The infected person is highly contagious for 4 days before the rash appears until 4 days after the rash appears. The measles virus can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person has left a room and still be able to infect others.

Measles spreads through droplet transmission from the nose, throat, and mouth of someone infected with the virus. These droplets spray out when the infected person coughs or sneezes.

Among unimmunized people exposed to the virus, over 90% will contract the disease. About one in 500 to one in 1,000 people who contract measles will die.

Incubation period

The typical time from exposure to a person infected with measles to development of the initial symptoms (incubation period) is 10-12 days (the range is 7 to 21 days). The rash occurs a few days after the initial symptoms (ranges from 7 to 18 days from exposure).

Anyone who has had measles is immune for life.

Rubeola is the scientific name used for measles. People often confuse rubeola with rubella (German measles), a different viral illness. While German measles is rarely fatal, it is dangerous in that infection of pregnant women causes birth defects and can cause miscarriage and fetal death.

Other terms describe measles. These include (erroneously) rubella, hard measles, red measles, 7-day measles, 8-day measles, 9-day measles, 10-day measles, and morbilli.

There were initially two types of vaccines developed against measles. Researchers developed one from a killed virus, and the other using a live measles virus that was weakened (attenuated according to Homeopathic rules) and could no longer cause the disease.

The killed measles virus (KMV) vaccine is not effective in preventing people from getting the disease, the medical professionals discontinued its use in 1967. The live virus vaccine has been modified a number of times to make it safer (further attenuated – heigh potency’s) and today is extremely effective in preventing the disease.

Symptoms and signs

A typical case of measles actually starts with a…

• Fever,
• runny nose,
• hacking cough, and
• red eyes (conjunctivitis).

After 2 to 4 days of these symptoms, the patient may develop spots within the mouth called Koplik spots. These spots look like little grains of white or bluish-white sand surrounded by a red ring and are usually found inside the cheek toward the back of the mouth (opposite the first and second upper molars).

The skin rash (also known as an exanthem or exanthema) appears 3 to 5 days after the onset of the initial symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes). The rash is a flat to slightly raised (maculopapular) red rash that usually last 5 to 6 days. It begins at the hairline and then progresses to the face and upper neck.

Over the next 2 to 3 days, the rash progresses downward to cover the entire body, including the hands and feet. The rash has mostly distinct lesions, but some may overlap (become confluent). Initially, these lesions will turn white when you press on them (blanch). After 3 to 4 days, they no longer will blanch. As the rash begins to fade, there will often be a fine flaking of the skin (desquamation). The rash fades in the same order that it appears.

The fever that occurs with measles is called a stepwise fever. The patient starts with a mild fever that progressively gets higher. Fevers often reach temperatures greater than 103 F (39.4 C).

Although not as common as other symptoms, some patients may have a sore throat.

Those people at high risk for measles include:

• children less than 1 year of age (although they have some immunity passed from their mother, it is not 100% effective).
• people who have not received the proper vaccination series.
• people who received immunoglobulin at the time of measles vaccination.

Measles while pregnant?

If a woman contracts measles while she is pregnant, she may have a miscarriage, a stillbirth, or a preterm delivery. The infant can also be born with measles infection. There appears to be no risk of having birth defects (unlike an infection with the rubella virus/German measles).

What is atypical measles?

Atypical measles occurs in people who received the killed measles vaccine (KMV; only used from 1963 until 1967) and who have an exposure to wild-type measles virus. The KMV unfortunately sensitizes the patient to the measles virus but does not offer any protection. The disease is characterized by fever, pleural effusions, pneumonia, and swelling of the extremities. The rash of atypical measles is different from measles in that it may have an urticarial component (hives) and usually appears first on the ankles and wrists.

Modified measles

Modified measles appears in patients who, because they were unimmunized, received immune globulin after exposure to a patient with measles. It also appears occasionally in young infants who have limited immunity from their mothers. The immune globulin prolongs the time from exposure to onset of symptoms (incubation period). When the symptoms do occur, they are much milder than those seen with normal measles and tend to last a shorter period of time.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of suspected measles is mostly clinical, meaning that the appearance and history of the patient suggest the diagnosis. In a person with known exposure to someone with measles or travel to somewhere, health care providers should always consider measles when faced with a patient who has a high fever and characteristic rash. Until the rash appears, the presence of Koplik spots should help to suggest the diagnosis. Most cases of suspected measles turn out not to be measles that’s why it is recommended that the diagnosis be confirmed using a blood test for IgM (antibody against the virus). If the IgM test is positive, medical professionals should obtain viral cultures.

Contact the state and local health department immediately for any suspected case in order to follow the correct procedures for viral culture and isolation of the patient.

If it is not measles, what else could it be

There are many infectious diseases and other conditions that can cause some of the symptoms of measles. These include, but are not limited to, dengue fever, drug reactions, enteroviral infections, fifth disease, German measles (rubella), Kawasaki disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, roseola, and toxic shock syndrome.

What if someone has been exposed to measles?

People who have been appropriately vaccinated (or who have had the disease) and who are exposed to a patient with measles do not need to do anything. If an unimmunized person is exposed to a patient with measles, they should receive the vaccine or Homeopathic Nosode (Morbillinium) as soon as possible. This may prevent the disease if given within 72 hours of exposure. Immune globulin may have some benefit if given within 6 days of exposure.

I (Dr. Qaisar Ahmed) recommend that household contacts of infected people, immunocompromised people, and pregnant women receive Morbillinium or immune globulin.

It is not recommended that health care professionals use allopathic immune globulin to control a measles outbreak but can use Morbillinium (in heigh only).

Complications with measles

Some cases of measles have an associated complication. These complications can include diarrhea, middle ear infections, pneumonia, blindness, acute brain inflammation (encephalitis, very rare), and persistent brain inflammation (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis or SSPE, extremely rare).

Blindness associated with measles is due to a combination of poor nutrition (specifically vitamin A deficiency) and the measles infection. Prevention is the most effective treatment.

Acute encephalitis, although rare, is extremely dangerous and results in death in a significant percentage of patients who develop it. When it occurs, acute encephalitis generally starts 6 days after onset of the rash. Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck, drowsiness, seizures, and coma.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is an extremely rare degenerative condition of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). A chronic infection of the central nervous system with the measles virus causes SSPE. Typically, symptoms start years after the patient had measles (average seven years, range 1 month to 27 years). The patient has a slow and progressive loss of brain function, seizures, and eventually death results. There is no known allopathic treatment for SSPE.

Most deaths from measles are due to pneumonia in children and encephalitis in adults. The people most likely to have complications (including death) are those who are malnourished or who have weakened immune systems (for example, people with AIDS or other conditions that weaken the immune system).

Allopathic treatment for measles after symptoms and signs develops

There is no specific treatment for measles in allopathy, the treatment of patients with measles focuses on symptom relief, for example:

• Specific complications like pneumonia may require antibiotics.
• Home remedies are simply symptomatic treatment with acetaminophen (Tylenol), lots of rest, and fluids.
• Patients should be on bed rest until the fever has resolved and should remain well hydrated.
• In malnourished patients, recommend vitamin A.
• Patients should be isolated to prevent spread of the disease.

How effective is the measles vaccine?

The only way to prevent measles is by receiving measles immunization (Morbillinium is the best choice), allopathically this is commonly given as a two-shot series that contains measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) or a shot containing measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) vaccine (MMRV).

Allopathic health care professionals do not recommend the MMRV for anyone older than 12 years of age, but it is proven that Morbillinium (Homeopathic) can be given in any age and even during infection. The current recommendation is that everyone receive two doses of the vaccine after 1 year of age. If a person receives the vaccine before 1 year of age, the person should receive two additional doses.

Is there any truth to the fear of getting autism from the MMR or MMRV

Yes, there are much valid scientific evidence that the allopathic measles vaccine, and other vaccines, is the cause of autism. Andrew Wakefield and colleagues proposed the possibility of an association between the measles vaccine and autism in 1998. A recent study performed in Japan after the MMR vaccine was removed from the market showed that autism continued to increase after the vaccination.

Homeopathic treatment for measles

Homeopathically there are a number of remedies that can cure Measels in any stage and in any age, here are few of them:

Morbillinum

Catarrh. Coryza. Cough. Ear affections. Eye affections. Measles. Skin affections. The well-known symptoms which characterize an attack of measles may all be taken as guides for its homoeopathic use. Its chief use hitherto has been as a prophylactic against infection, and to clear up aftereffects of an attack.

My own use of it has been confined to the 200th and higher. As a prophylactic given to those who are, or may be, exposed to infection, a dose of the 200th twice or thrice daily. For an attack of the disease, I find nothing better than Morbillinium-200, eight or ten globules in six ounces of water, a dessertspoonful every two hours.

The effect of this is heightened by giving alternately Belladona 200 in the same way. These two medicines will be sufficient to carry through any uncomplicated case.

Belladonna

Belladonna acts upon every part of the nervous system, it has a marked action on the vascular system, skin and glands. Belladonna always is associated with hot, red skin, flushed face, glaring eyes, throbbing carotids, excited mental state, hyperesthesia of all senses, delirium, restless sleep, convulsive movements, dryness of mouth and throat with aversion to water, neuralgic pains that come and go suddenly. Heat, redness, throbbing and burning.

Great children’s remedy. Epileptic spasms followed by nausea and vomiting. Measles. Scarlet fever and also prophylactic. Exophthalmic goiter. Corresponds to the symptoms of “airsickness” in aviators. Give as preventive. Sleeplessness, with drowsiness.

Eyes feel swollen and protruding, staring, brilliant; conjunctiva red; dry, burn; photophobia; shooting in eyes. Tearing pain in middle and external ear. Humming noises. Membrana tympani bulges and injected. Parotid gland swollen. Sensitive to loud tones. Hearing very acute. Otitis media. Pain causes delirium. Barking cough, whooping cough, with pain in stomach. A high feverish state with comparative absence of toxemia. Burning, pungent, steaming, heat. Feet icy cold. Superficial blood-vessels, distended. Perspiration dries only on head. No thirst with fever.

Hepar Sulphuricum

Eruptions and glandular swellings. Unhealthy skin. Croupous catarrhal inflammation, profuse secretion, easy perspiration. Humid scald-head itching and burning. Ulcers on cornea. Iritis, with pus in anterior chamber; purulent conjunctivitis, with marked chemosis, profuse discharge, great sensitiveness to touch and air. Eyes and lids red and inflamed. Discharge of fetid pus from the ears. Whizzing and throbbing in the ears, with hardness of hearing. Deafness after measles and/or scarlet fever. Pustules in auditory canal and auricle. Mastoiditis. Nose sore, ulcerated. Soreness of nostrils, with catarrhal troubles. Dry, hoarse cough. Choking cough. Rattling, croaking cough; suffocative attacks; has to rise up and bend head backwards. Anxious, wheezing, moist breathing, asthma worse in dry cold air; better in damp. Palpitation of heart.

Abscesses: suppurating glands are very sensitive. Papules prone to suppurate and extend. Acne in youth. Suppurate with prickly pain. Easily bleed. Angio-neurotic edema. Unhealthy skin: every little injury suppurates. Chapped skin, with deep cracks on hands and feet. Ulcers, with bloody suppuration, smelling like old cheese. Ulcers very sensitive to contact, burning, stinging, easily bleeding. Sweats day and night without relief. “Cold sores” very sensitive. Sticking or pricking in afflicted parts. Putrid ulcers, surrounded by little pimples. Smallpox. Measles. Herpes circinate. Constant offensive exhalation from the body.

Mercurius Corrosive

Phlyctenules; deep ulcers on cornea. Excessive photophobia and acrid lachrymation. Iris muddy in color, thick, and neither contracts nor dilates. Retinitis albuminuric, ophthalmia neonatorum. Lids edematous, red, excoriated. Severe burning. Soreness of the eyes. Excessive coryza. Ozaena, with perforation of septum nasi. Rawness and smarting in nostrils. Post-nasal swelling, mucous membrane dry, red, and covered with bloody mucus.

Tongue swollen and inflamed. Salivation. Pyorrhea. Ptyalism. Taste salty and bitter. Throat red, swollen, painful, intensely inflamed. Uvula swollen. Swallowing painful. Most pain in post-nasal with sharp pains to ears. Burning pain, with great swelling; worse, slight external pressure. All glands about thorax swollen. Intense burning in urethra. Urine hot, burning, scanty or suppressed; bloody, greenish discharge, albuminous. Measles.

Sulphur

A best anti-viral. Its action is centrifugal-from within outward-having an elective affinity for the skin – heat and burning, with itching; made worse by heat of bed. Constant heat on top of head. Tinea capitis, dry form. Measles. Burning ulceration of lids. Ulceration of cornea. Cornea like ground glass. Chronic ophthalmia, with much burning and itching. Parenchymatous keratitis. Deafness, preceded by exceedingly sensitive hearing, catarrhal deafness. Throat burning. Oppression and burning sensation in chest. Difficult respiration. Talks, jerks, and twitches during sleep. Vivid dreams. Frequent flashes of heat.

Violent ebullitions of heat throughout entire body. Dry skin and great thirst. Night sweat, on nape and occiput. Perspiration of single parts. Disgusting sweats. Remittent type. Freckles. Itching, burning; worse scratching and washing. Pimply eruption, pustules, rhagades, hangnails. Excoriation, especially in folds. Feeling of a band around bones. Skin affections after local medication. Pruritus, especially from warmth, is evening, often recurs in springtime, in damp weather.

Lycopodium Clavatum

Tickling cough. Dyspnea. Tensive, constrictive, burning pain in chest. Measles. Cough deep, hollow. Expectorations gray, thick, bloody, purulent, salty. Catarrh of the chest in infants, seems full of mucus rattling. Neglected pneumonia, with great dyspnea. Eczema about and behind ears. Otorrhea and deafness with or without tinnitus; after scarlatina and measles. Humming and roaring with hardness of hearing. Head shakes head without apparent cause. Twists face and mouth. Pressing headache on vertex.

Drowsy during day. Starting in sleep. Dreams of accidents. Skin ulcerates. Abscesses beneath skin. Hives; worse, warmth. Violent itching; fissured eruptions. Acne. Chronic eczema. Skin becomes thick and indurated. Brown spots, freckles on face and nose. Dry, shrunken, especially palms. Offensive secretions; viscid and offensive perspiration. Psoriasis.

Graphite

Humid, itching eruption on hairy scalp, emitting a fetid odor. Cataleptic condition. Burning blisters in mouth, on tongue, salivation. Ophthalmia, with intolerance of artificial light. Eyelids red and swollen. Blepharitis. Dryness of the lids. Eczema of lids; fissured. Dryness of inner ear. Cracking in ears when eating. Moisture and eruptions behind the ears. Hears better in noise. Hardness of hearing. Hissing in the ears. Detonation in ear (like a gun). Measles.

Skin rough, hard, persistent dryness of portions of skin unaffected by eczema. Early stage of keloid and fibroma. Pimples and acne. Eruptions, oozing out a sticky exudation. Rawness in bends of limbs, groins, neck, behind ears. Unhealthy skin: every little injury suppurates. Ulcers discharging a glutinous fluid, thin and sticky. Swelling and induration of glands. Gouty nodosities. Cracks in nipples, mouth, between toes, anus. Phlegmonous erysipelas of face; burning and stinging pain.

Nose painful internally. Smell abnormally acute; cannot tolerate flowers. Scabs and fissures in nostrils. Eczema of nose. Itching pimples. Moist eczema around mouth and chin. Erysipelas, burning and stinging. Constriction of chest; spasmodic asthma, suffocative attacks. Pain in middle of chest, with cough, scraping and soreness. Chronic hoarseness with skin affections. Inability to control the vocal cords; hoarseness on beginning to sing and for breaking voice.

Aconite

This medicine is for the first stages of any disease. Measles – to reduce the severity. High fever, especially coming on late at night around midnight, thirst and eyes may be painful. Inflammations, inflammatory fevers. Serous membranes and muscular tissues affected. Burning in internal parts; tingling, coldness and numbness. Influenza. Tension of arteries; emotional and physical mental tension explain many symptoms.

Euphrasia

Catarrhal affections of mucous membranes especially of eyes and nose. Profuse acrid lachrymation and bland coryza. Hawking up of offensive mucus. Bursting headache with dazzling of eyes. Catarrhal headache. Profuse, fluent coryza, with violent cough and abundant expectoration. Catarrhal conjunctivitis; discharge of acrid matter. Burning and swelling of the lids. Frequent inclination to blink. Free discharge of acrid, sticky mucus on cornea; must wink to remove it. Little blisters on cornea. Opacities. Rheumatic iritis. Ptosis.

Profuse, fluent coryza in morning, with much cough and expectoration. Influenza. Gags when clearing the throat in morning. Whooping-cough only in daytime, with profuse lachrymation. First stage of measles; eye symptoms marked. Consequence of external injuries. Yawning when walking in open air. Sleepy during day. Chilly and cold. Sweat mostly on chest, at night during sleep.

Mezereum

Skin symptoms, affections of bones, and neuralgias most important, especially about teeth and face. Eruptions after vaccination. Burning, darting sensation in the muscles. Headache; worse from talking. Stupefying headache. Affections of external head; scaly eruption, white scabs. Head covered with thick, leathery crusts, under which pus collects, Violent neuralgia about face and teeth, running towards ear, at night; worse, eating; better near hot stove. Roots of teeth decay. Teeth feel elongated. Measles. Sneezing, coryza, interior of nose, excoriated. Post-nasal adenoids.

Ciliary neuralgia after operations. Especially after removal of eyeball. Face red, eruption around mouth, with coryza. Soreness and burning in bones of thorax. Constriction across chest. Cough. Eczema; intolerable itching; chilliness with pruritus; worse in bed. Ulcers itch and burn, surrounded by vesicles and shining, fiery-red areola. Zona, with burning pain. Measles. Eruptions ulcerate and form thick scabs under purulent matter exudes.

Pulsatilla Pratensis

Hearing difficult. Otorrhea. Thick bland discharge and offensive odor from ear. Catarrhal otitis. Otalgia. Diminishes acuteness of hearing. Thick, profuse, yellow, bland discharges form eyes. Itching and burning in eyes. Profuse lachrymation and secretion of mucus. Lids inflamed, agglutinated. Styes. Veins of fundus oculi greatly enlarged. Ophthalmia neonatorum. Subacute conjunctivitis.

Coryza; stoppage of right nostril, pressing pain at root of nose. Loss of smell. Large green fetid scales in nose. Yellow mucus; abundant in morning. Bad smells, as of old catarrh. Yellow or white tongue, covered with a tenacious mucus.

Capricious hoarseness. Dry cough in evening and at night; must sit up in bed to get relief; and loose cough in the morning, with copious mucous expectoration. Pressure upon the chest and soreness. Pain as from ulcer in middle of chest. Expectoration bland, thick, bitter, greenish. Short breath, anxiety, and palpitation when lying. Smothering sensation on lying down. Measles.

Wide awake in the evening; first sleep restless. Wakes languid, unrefreshed. Irresistible sleepiness in afternoon. Sleeps with hands over head. Urticaria, after rich food, with diarrhea, from delayed menses, worse undressing. Measles. Acne at puberty. Varicose veins. Fever and chilliness, even in warm room, without thirst. Chilly with pains, in spots, worse evening.

Bryonia Alba

Acts on all serous membranes and the viscera they contain. Aching in every muscle. Vertigo, nausea, faintness on rising, confusion. Bursting, splitting headache. Lips parched, dry, cracked. Dryness of mouth, tongue, and throat, with excessive thirst. Tongue coated yellowish, dark brown, heavily white in gastric derangement. Bitter taste. Throat: Dryness, sticking on swallowing, scraped and constricted.

Measles. Soreness in larynx and trachea. Hoarseness. Dry, hacking cough from irritation in upper trachea. Cough, dry, at night; must sit up; worse after eating or drinking, with vomiting, with stitches in chest, and expectoration of rust-colored sputa. Frequent desire to take a long breath; must expand lungs. Difficult, quick respiration with stitches in chest. Croupous and pleuro-pneumonia. Expectoration brick shade, tough, and falls like lumps of jelly. Tough mucus in trachea, loosened only with much hawking. Heaviness beneath the sternum extending towards the right shoulder. Cough worse by going into warm room. Stitches in cardiac region. Angina pectoris.

Skin yellow; pale, swollen, dropsical; hot and painful. Seborrhoea. Hair very greasy. Drowsy; starting when falling asleep. Delirium: busy with business matters and what he had read.

Fever. Pulse full, hard, tense, and quick. Chill with external coldness, dry cough, stitches. Internal heat. Sour sweat after slight exertion. Easy, profuse perspiration. Rheumatic and typhoid with gastro-hepatic complications.

Arsenicum Album

Great anguish and restlessness. Scalp itches intolerably; circular patches of bare spots; rough, dirty, sensitive, and covered with dry scales; nightly burning and itching; dandruff. Burning in eyes, with acrid lachrymation. Lids red, ulcerated, scabby, scaly, granulated. Edema around eyes. External inflammation. Corneal ulceration. Intense photophobia. Ciliary neuralgia. High temperature. Periodicity marked with adynamic. Septic fevers. Intermittent. Measles.

Ears – skin within, raw and burning. Thin, excoriating, offensive otorrhea. Roaring in ears, during a paroxysm of pain. Lupus.

Face swollen, pale, yellow, cachectic, sunken, cold, and covered with sweat. Mouth unhealthy, easily-bleeding gums. Ulceration of mouth with dryness and burning heat. Epithelioma of lips. Tongue dry, clean, and red; stitching and burning pain in tongue, ulcerated with blue color. Bloody saliva. Neuralgia of teeth; feel long and very sore. Throat swollen, edematous, constricted, burning, unable to swallow. Diphtheritic membrane dry and wrinkled.

Air-passages constricted. Asthma worse midnight. Suffocative catarrh. Cough. Expectoration scanty, frothy. Darting pain in lungs. Wheezing respiration. Hemoptysis with pain between shoulders; burning heat all over. Cough dry.

Itching, burning, swellings; oedema, eruption, papular, dry, rough, scaly; worse cold and scratching. Malignant pustules. Ulcers with offensive discharge. Anthrax. Poisoned wounds. Urticaria, with burning and restlessness. Psoriasis. Scirrhous. Icy coldness of body. Epithelioma of the skin. Gangrenous inflammations. Slee disturbed, anxious, restless. Must have head raised by pillows. Suffocative fits during sleep.

Apis Mellifica

Edema, red, rosy hue, stinging pains, soreness. Erysipelatous inflammations, dropsical effusions and anasarca. Eyes lids swollen, red, edematous, everted, inflamed; burn and sting. Conjunctiva bright red, puffy. Lachrymation hot. Photophobia. Tongue fiery red, swollen, sore, and raw, with vesicles. Scalding in mouth and throat. Tongue feels scalded, red hot, trembling. Gums swollen. Lips swollen. Membrane of mouth and throat glossy, as if varnished. Red, shining, and puffy, like erysipelas. Measles.

Throat constricted, stinging pains. Uvula swollen, sac-like. Throat swollen, inside and out; tonsils swollen, puffy, fiery red. Ulcers on tonsils. Fiery red margin around leathery membrane. Sensation of fishbone in throat. Hoarseness; dyspnea, breathing hurried and difficult. Edema of larynx. Suffocation; short, dry cough, suprasternal. Hydrothorax.

Skin – Swellings after bites; sore, sensitive. Stinging. Erysipelas, with sensitiveness and swelling, rosy hue. Carbuncles, with burning, stinging pain.

Very drowsy. Dreams full of care and toil. Screams and sudden starting during sleep. Fever – afternoon chill, with thirst; worse on motion and heat. External heat. Sweat slight, with sleepiness. Perspiration breaks out and dries up frequently. Sleeps after the fever paroxysm. After perspiration, nettle rash, also with shuddering.

Rhus Toxicodendron

The effects on the skin, rheumatic pains, mucous membrane affections, and a typhoid type of fever. Septic conditions. Cellulitis and infections, carbuncles in early stages. Rheumatism in the cold season. Septicemia.

Measles: Swollen, red, edematous; orbital cellulitis. Pustular inflammations. Photophobia; profuse flow of yellow pus. Edema of lids, suppurative iritis. Lids inflamed, agglutinated swollen. Circumscribed corneal injection. Intensive ulceration of the cornea. Iritis, after exposure to cold and dampness, and of rheumatic origin. Pain in ears. Lobules swollen. Discharge of bloody pus.

Jaws crack when chewing. Easy dislocation of jaw. Swollen face, erysipelas. Tongue red and cracked; coated, except red triangular space at the tip; dry and red at edges. Corners of mouth ulcerated; fever-blisters around mouth and chin. Pain in maxillary joint.

Throat sore, with swollen glands. Sticking pain on swallowing. Parotitis. Tickling behind upper sternum. Dry, teasing cough from midnight until morning, during a chill, or when putting hands out of bed. Influenza. Oppression of the chest cannot get breath with sticking pains. Bronchial cough, worse on awaking and with expectoration of small plugs of mucus.

Fever adynamic; restless, trembling. Typhoid; tongue dry and brown; sordes; bowels loose; great restlessness. Intermittent; chill, with dry cough and restlessness. During heat, urticaria. Hydroa. Chilly, as if cold water were poured over him, followed by heat and inclination to stretch the limbs.

Skin red, swollen; itching intense. Vesicles, herpes; urticaria; pemphigus; erysipelas; vesicular suppurative forms. Glands swollen. Cellulitis. Burning eczematous eruptions with tendency to scale formation.

Who should not receive measles vaccinations

The following groups of people should not receive measles vaccinations:

• People who have suffered a severe allergic reaction to either the measles vaccine or its components (gelatin or neomycin) should not receive the vaccine.
• Women known to be pregnant should not receive the vaccine. Avoid pregnancy for four weeks after vaccination.
• Severely immunocompromised patients (cancer patients or patients who are receiving large doses of corticosteroids) should not receive the vaccine. However, those leukemia patients who have been in remission for three months may receive the MMR.
• Patients with severe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections should not receive the vaccine.
• People with a moderate to severe acute illness should wait until their illness resolves before receiving the vaccine.

Patients with history of thrombocytopenic purpura or thrombocytopenia (low platelets) may be at increased risk, and immunization should be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Can the measles virus be used to cure cancer

In 2014, there were case reports of patients with multiple myeloma (a type of blood “cancer”) being treated with a genetically engineered (altered) measles virus that attacks tumor cells. This is called virotherapy (Nosode). This type of therapy has been used since the 1830s by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann MD, now there is renewed hope that this new use of the measles virus will bring hope to many patients with multiple myeloma.
