Patient may wake in a cold sweat, wondering what’s causing his/her body to behave in this way.

Night sweats can occur for many reasons that affect people regardless of sex.

  • Substance abuse: Including alcohol, tobacco, heroin and cocaine.

Drenching night sweats are common during menopause. Night sweats that occur alongside other symptoms may be a sign of an infection, diabetes, cancer etc.

Possible Causes

Night sweats can affect anyone, but they’re most commonly associated with people assigned female at birth. Hormone changes related to reproductive hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, can cause unpleasant changes in our body temperature that make us feel too hot. Our body may respond with a flash (hot flash) to cool down, or we may sweat excessively (night sweat).

Perimenopause and menopause

Night sweats are common during perimenopause and menopause. Menopause officially begins when patient haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months. The age of onset is 49-51. Perimenopause is the period that precedes menopause. During perimenopause, ovaries produce less estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and lady’s periods become irregular. Perimenopause usually happens between the ages of 40 and 50.

Changing hormone levels during perimenopause and menopause likely cause our hypothalamus (hypothalamus controls our body heat) to have trouble regulating our body temperature. Think of it as a glitch in our body’s internal thermostat.

Patients with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) may experience night sweats for reasons similar to people going through perimenopause and menopause. With POI, ovaries stop producing estrogen before age 40.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

Hormone fluctuations during menstrual cycle can also cause night sweats. The estrogen levels decrease before period, in the time most commonly associated with PMS and PMDD, symptoms like irritability, night sweats and cramps are more commonly associated with PMS and PMDD.

Pregnancy

Fluctuating hormone levels during pregnancy may also cause night sweats. Pregnancy-related night sweats are more common during the first trimester (weeks 1 to 14) and the third trimester (weeks 27 to childbirth). The sweating may continue a few weeks after delivery as patient’s hormones adjust to their pre-pregnancy levels.

Allopathic treatment

Allopathic treatment depends on what’s causing the night sweats. For menopause-related night sweats, hormone therapy — estrogen alone or with progestin — may be an option. Hormone therapy can also help with other symptoms of menopause, including bone loss and vaginal dryness. You shouldn’t receive estrogen replacement therapy if you have a history of breast cancer. All allopathic hormone therapies carry risks, including blood clots and gallbladder inflammation.

Non-estrogen allopathic medications used to treat night sweats include:

  • Anticonvulsants (gabapentin, pregabalin): Also used to control/prevent seizures.
  • Antidepressants: A low dose of Brisdelle, a form of paroxetine to treat hot flashes.
  • Clonidine: Also used to treat high blood pressure, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and other conditions.
  • Megestrol: Also used to treat breast and uterine cancers, increase appetite and reverse weight loss.
  • Oxybutynin: Also used to treat urinary conditions.

Homeopathic treatment for Night Sweats

Homeopathic treatment is the most efficient, long lasting and without any side effects method. There are many other medical conditions that may be treated along with night sweats based on the circumstances of the patient, for example:

Menopause

Menopause plays a little trick on the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is embedded deep inside the brain. It does several things, but one of the hypothalamus’ most important functions is controlling our body temperature. When a person is too cold, it’s the hypothalamus that tells our muscles to shiver, and vice versa.

About 80% of menopausal women will experience dropping estrogen levels throw the body’s temperature regulation out of whack. Symptoms include becoming flushed and sweaty.

Alcoholism

When a person drinks, that can’t be processed by your kidneys accumulates in the bloodstream. Alcohol enlarges the blood vessels near the surface of the skin, and this leads to sweating.

Side Effect of allopathic Medications

Our skin growing extra damp after starting an allopathic medication, for example:

Being Pregnant

Whether it’s hot flashes while you’re awake or night sweats (nocturnal hyperhidrosis) as you sleep, pregnancy can be a sweaty affair. Although it may have many causes, nocturnal hyperhidrosis is one early sign of pregnancy.
