Xanthoma is a condition in which fatty growths develop underneath the skin. It is usually caused by high levels of blood lipids, or fats. These growths can appear anywhere on the body, but they typically form on the:
- joints, especially the knees and elbows
- feet
- hands
- buttocks
Tendon xanthomas are fatty deposits or bumps on the tendons. One may not have even noticed these bumps growing until they were larger. The most common cause of tendon xanthomas is a lipid disease called familial hypercholesterolemia. Another cause could be Cerebro tendinous xanthomatosis (CTX). However, in CTX, tests can show low to normal cholesterol levels and high amounts of cholestanol.
Xanthomas can vary in size. The growths may be as small as a pinhead or as large as a grape. They often look like a flat bump under the skin and sometimes appear yellow or orange. They usually don’t cause any pain. However, they might be tender and itchy. There may be clusters of growths in the same area or several individual growths on different parts of the body.
What causes xanthoma?
Xanthoma is usually caused by high levels of blood lipids, or fats. This may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as:
- hyperlipidemia, or high blood cholesterol levels,
- diabetes,
- hypothyroidism,
- primary biliary cirrhosis,
- cholestasis,
- nephrotic syndrome,
- hematologic disease (such as monoclonal gammopathy metabolic lipid disorders. These are genetic conditions that affect the body’s ability to break down substances and to maintain important bodily functions, such as digestion of fats etc),
- cancer,
- side effect of certain allopathic medications, such as tamoxifen, prednisone, cyclosporine etc.
Xanthoma itself isn’t dangerous, but the underlying condition that’s causing it needs to be addressed. There’s also a type of xanthoma that affects the eyelids called xanthelasma.
Who is at risk for xanthoma?
Any person is at an increased risk for xanthoma if he/she has any of the medical conditions described above. Any person also more likely to develop xanthoma if he/she has high cholesterol or triglyceride levels and has parasites in the body.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnosis simply by examining the skin. A skin biopsy can confirm the presence of a fatty deposit sometimes along with parasites beneath the skin.
Also advise blood tests to check blood lipid levels, assess liver function, and rule out parasites and other diseases.
Allopathic Treatment for xanthoma
There is no treatment for xanthoma in allopathy. If xanthoma is a symptom of a medical condition, then the underlying cause must be treated. This will often get rid of the growths and minimize the likelihood that they’ll return. Diabetes and cholesterol levels that are well-controlled are less likely to cause xanthoma.
Other allopathic treatments for xanthoma include surgical removal, laser surgery and chemical treatment with trichloroacetic acid. Xanthoma growths can return after allopathic treatment these methods don’t necessarily cure the condition.
