People have been suffering from migraines, strokes, and heart disease, including heart attack, for centuries. Yet, medical researchers have only recently identified a possible link between the intense, often debilitating pain of migraine headaches and the latter two diseases. Statistics show that women are nearly three times more likely than men to suffer from complex migraines. How these migraines are directly or indirectly related to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke could depend on specific health factors and lifestyle choices such as smoking, taking oral contraceptives, drinking alcohols etc.
But, if the data from a 22-year study are any concrete indication, then it’s clear that there’s an obvious relationship that needs further investigation.
Migraines: Important Warning Sign for Cardiovascular Disease
Professor Tobias Kurth, lead researcher and head of the Institute of Public Health at Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin (a learning hospital), concluded in the 2016 paper that “migraines should be considered an important risk marker for cardiovascular disease, particularly in women.”
When it comes to migraines themselves, unfortunately, allopathic researchers have yet to develop a permanent cure or solution, although there are countless Homoeopathic medicines in the market with great success and permanent cure.
Allopathic treatment for Migraine
Allopathic Migraine treatment is aimed at stopping symptoms and preventing future attacks.
Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories:
- Pain-relieving medications. Also known as acute or abortive treatment, these types of drugs are taken during migraine attacks and are designed to stop symptoms.
- Preventive medications. These types of drugs are taken regularly, often daily to reduce the severity or frequency of migraines.
Treatment choices depend on the frequency and severity of headaches, whether patient have nausea and vomiting with headaches, how disabling his/her headaches are, and other medical conditions.
Allopathic Medications for migraine relief
Medications used to relieve migraine pain work best when taken at the first sign of an oncoming migraine — as soon as signs and symptoms of a migraine begin.
- Pain relievers. These over the counter or prescription pain relievers include aspirin or ibuprofen. When taken too long, these might cause medication-overuse headaches, and possibly ulcers and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, Hydrothorax, liver diseases etc. Migraine relief medications that combine caffeine, aspirin and acetaminophen may be helpful, but usually only against mild migraine pain.
- Triptans. Prescription drugs such as sumatriptan and rizatriptan are used to treat migraine because they block pain pathways in the brain. Taken as pills, shots or nasal sprays, they can relieve many symptoms of migraine. They might not be safe for those at risk of a stroke or heart attack, arteriosclerosis. pulmonary diseases (like pulmonary embolism, hydrothorax) etc.
- Dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal). Available as a nasal spray or injection, this drug is effective when taken shortly after the start of migraine symptoms for migraines that tend to last longer than 24 hours. Side effects can include worsening of migraine-related vomiting and nausea, sneezing, arteriosclerosis, heart diseases, hypertension, kidney diseases including kidney failure, liver diseases and failure etc.
- Lasmiditan (Reyvow). This tablet is approved for the treatment of migraine with or without aura. In drug trials, Lasmiditan significantly improved headache pain. Lasmiditan can have a sedative effect and cause dizziness, so patients taking it are advised not to drive or operate machinery for at least eight hours.
- Ubrogepant (Ubrelvy). This oral calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist is approved for the treatment of acute migraine with or without aura in adults. It’s the first drug of this type approved for migraine treatment. In drug trials, Ubrogepant was more effective than placebo in relieving pain and other migraine symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound two hours after taking it. Common side effects include dry mouth, nausea and excessive sleepiness, pulmonary, hepatic and renal diseases. Ubrogepant should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitor drugs.
- CGRP antagonists. Ubrogepant and Rimegepant are oral CGRP antagonists approved for the treatment of acute migraine with or without aura in adults. In drug trials, drugs from this class were more effective than placebo in relieving pain and other migraine symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound two hours after taking it. Common side effects include dry mouth, nausea and excessive sleepiness. Patients with cardiac, renal, liver diseases should be careful with CGRP. Ubrogepant and Rimegepant should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitor drugs.
- Opioid medications. For people who can’t take other migraine medications, narcotic opioid medications might help. Because they can be highly addictive, these are usually used only if no other treatments are effective.
- Anti-nausea drugs. These can help if patient’s migraine with aura is accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Anti-nausea drugs include chlorpromazine, metoclopramide or prochlorperazine. These are usually taken with pain medications.
All of these medications are not safe to take during pregnancy. If your patient is pregnant or trying to get pregnant, don’t advise any of these medications as first choice.
Allopathic Preventive medications for Migraine
Allopathically prevent frequent migraines. The doctor might recommend preventive medications if patient have frequent, long-lasting or severe headaches that don’t respond well to treatment.
All preventive medication is aimed at reducing how often a person get a migraine, how severe the attacks are, and how long they last. Options include:
- Blood pressure-lowering medications. These include beta blockers such as propranolol and metoprolol tartrate. Calcium channel blockers such as verapamil can be helpful in preventing migraines with aura. (Patients with pulmonary diseases, asthma, liver and renal diseases should be careful with).
- Antidepressants. A tricyclic antidepressant (amitriptyline) can prevent migraines. Because of the severe and deep acting side effects of amitriptyline, such as sleepiness, other antidepressants might be prescribed instead.
- Anti-seizure drugs. Valproate and topiramate might help if patient have less frequent migraines, but can cause side effects such as dizziness, liver function, renal function, weight changes, nausea and many more. These medications are contraindicated for pregnant women or women trying to get pregnant.
- Botox injections. Injections of onabotulinumtoxinA about every 12 weeks help prevent migraines in some adults.
- CGRP monoclonal antibodies. Erenumab-aooe, fremanezumab-vfrm, galcanezumab-gnlm, and eptinezumab-jjmr are newer drugs to treat migraines. They’re given monthly or quarterly by injection. Common side effects include dry mouth, nausea and excessive sleepiness. Patients with cardiac, renal, liver diseases should be careful with CGRP. All side effect is still unknown as this drug is newer and is still under study.
Homoeopathic Treatment for Migraine
Homeopathic Migraine treatment is aimed treat the root cause and stop symptoms and preventing forever or at least for many years. Treatment duration is of course individual but lasts no more than 20-30 days.
Here are few medicines for migraine treatment:
Belladonna
Belladonna can be very helpful for migraine headaches with intense throbbing, pulsating headaches, an extreme fullness in the head, photophobia…Light worsen the headache, noise is unbearable.
In some cases, exposure to cold air can trigger a migraine episode. In others, a head bath with cold water can bring on migraine headaches.
Hard pressure over the head is the only way some relief. Keynote for the use of Belladonna is sensation of fullness with a throbbing headache. At times it is also used for headaches resulting from high blood pressure.
Glonoinum for Migraine
Glonoinum is most helpful in treating migraine with excessive congestion in the head. The head feels very large, as if it would burst. In such a migraine attack, patients in pain are seen holding their head in hands. The eyeballs seem protruded. Extreme heaviness in the head, heat around the head is unbearable, uncovering the head relieves the headache.
The migraine gets better with sleep while walking worsens the migraine headache. Apart from congestive headaches, migraine triggered by sun exposure (heat up/sun stroke).
Iris Versicolor
Iris Versicolor – a most valuable medicine for migraine when attended with intense nausea, vomiting or acidity. Burning may be noted in any part of the alimentary canal. Vomiting of acidic, sour, bitter, bitter, acrid, belching with intense burning behind the sternum and in the throat is well marked.
Acidic stomach reflux (GERD) leads to headaches. Headache with diarrhea, migraine begins with a blur before the eyes.
Epiphegus
Epiphegus is a valuable medicine for treating migraine where exhaustion – mental or physical, sets off the migraine episode. It is used where the slightest deviation from routine work brings on a migraine attack. Although it works for both sided migraines, yet comparatively better results are seen in left-sided headaches with Epiphegus. A peculiar attending symptom is increased saliva with constant inclination to spit.
Kali Phosphoricum
Migraine triggered by stress; Kali Phos proves extremely useful.
The unique indication for use of Kali Phos is that stress, tensions and worry lead to migraine headaches. Exhaustion and weakness usually accompany the migraine in such cases.
Natrum Muriaticum
Natrum Muriaticum is the best prescription for migraine attacks that worsen around the menstrual cycle. The headache may be triggered before, during or at the close of the menstrual cycle.
Another unique symptom is migraine headache that starts with sunrise, continues through the day and vanishes after sunset. This is popularly known as the “sunrise to sunset headache”.
Also, in cases where the migraine headache feels like little hammers knocking on the brain. Migraine headaches in students especially in girls who are anemic. Migraines with numbness or tingling is felt in the nose, tongue or lips before the migraine attack; headache caused by eye strain.
Nux Vomica
Nux Vomica is a very effective remedy for migraine with gastric troubles.
Migraine due to indigestion, flatulence, constipation and piles, migraine headaches get worse after taking coffee, spicy food and alcoholic drinks. The headache may be located in any part of the head. The person feels the need to press the head against something hard for relief.
Gelsemium for Migraine 
Gelsemium works well when dim sight occurs with a headache. In some cases, temporary blindness precedes onset of headache. In most cases the pain is felt in the back of the head (occipital headache). With this a sensation of band around the head, Heaviness of eyelids, headache worsens from mental exertion. Pressure may give relief in pain when it is needed.
Spigelia
Spigelia is a most effective medicine for left-sided migraine (headache is located over the left temporal region, forehead and eyes).
In most cases, the pain begins in the occipital region of the head, extends upward and settles over the left eye. The pain is violent, throbbing and pulsating in nature. There is a sensation of a tight band around the head. Stooping seems to worsen the headache. Severe pain in the eyeballs may attend. Eye movement worsens this pain.
Sanguinaria Canadensis
Sanguinaria Canadensis is a good medicine for right-sided migraine. The pain starts from the back of the head i.e. occiput, ascends and settles over the right eye. Lying down quietly in a dark room brings relief. In some cases, sleep may relieve pain.
Fasting (going without meals) often triggers a migraine, headache starts in the morning, increases during the day and lasts until sunset, migraine during menopause.
Sepia
Sepia is the most suitable medicine for migraine attacks in women around menopause. In such cases, terrible headaches accompany menopause. The headache gets worse indoors, open air brings relief. Nausea and vomiting may attend migraine headaches. Lying on the painful side of the head affords relief. The top of the head may feel cool in such cases.
In general, hot flushes, sometimes along with sweat, are well marked.
Cyclamen
Cyclamen is majorly indicated for migraine attacks that begin with flickering, fiery sparks before the eyes or dim vision. These visual symptoms that precede the migraine headache are referred to as aura. Migraine headaches start on rising in the morning. Shooting pain is experienced in the temporal region. Vertigo, especially when standing, may accompany the headache.
Pulsatilla
Very effective medicine for females who get headaches before menses. It is accompanied with vomiting. 
Sometimes they may also complain of headache at the appearance of menses and end of menstrual cycle. In such cases pain is mostly throbbing at the top of head. They may also have irregularity of menstrual periods.
Ipecacuanha
Ipecac is a very helpful medicine for cases of headache with nausea and vomiting. Throbbing and heated sensation is felt in the head. In most cases, the pain can be present in the back of the head or top of the head.
Ruta graveolens
An important medicine for headaches caused by eye strain. Stitching pain is felt in the head from reading mostly where it is required.
Kali Bichrome
Managing headache preceded by blurred vision. The headache occurs in small spots and is marked over the eyebrows. Nausea and vomiting may accompany other symptoms.
Natrum Carbonicum
Other than Glonoinum, another medicine that shows quick and effective results in migraine headache from sun exposure is Natrum Carbonicum.
Vertigo appears along with headache from sun exposure in such cases. The pressive headache is accompanied by cloudiness of eyes. Heat in the head and congestion may be felt. Shooting pain in the forehead also suggests use of Natrum Carbonicum.
Magnesia Phosphorica
Headache: pains shooting, darting, stabbing, shifting; intermittent and paroxysmal. Headache: excruciating; spasmodic; neuralgic or rheumatic, Nervous headache, with sparks before eyes; diplopia.  
During the night, severe throbbing pressure on vertex, l. side, deep in brain. Dull headache, as if brain too heavy (after protracted mental effort). Headache greater towards evening, but changes to a pressure above eyebrows, especially right.
Headache beginning in, or worst in occiput, and constant whilst attending school. Severe headache: face flushed, red; pain began in occiput, extended over whole head; sick at stomach; aches all over; better towards 9 or 10 a.m. to 4 or 8 p.m.
Pressive pain in head down through middle of brain. Pain through temples, top and back of head, with sensation of fullness, better lying down.
Sensation of a strong shock of electricity beginning in head and extending to all parts of body. Severe headache began in occiput on waking, extending overhead, located over both eyes, with severe nausea, and terminated 5 p.m. in a pronounced chill.
Severe pricking overhead and forehead, as if rubbed with a fine brush (after becoming warm from eating). Pustules or large pimples (like blood-boils), with redness and rawness, appeared on r. side of scalp, but did not suppurate. Large, white, shining scales can be combed out in handfuls twenty times a day. Scalp feels rough like a grater, and the fine particles combed out feel like sand.
