Many young doctors still don’t know that what is the true nature of hay fever. Many a time have I seen that some doctors (especially young) resemble it like an acute disease, or a manifestation of psora.
Allergic rhinitis is also called hay fever, it’s an allergic reaction that causes sneezing, congestion, itchy nose and watery eyes. Pollen, pet dander, mold and insects can lead to hay fever symptoms.
In my experience hay fever is the allergic reaction of body/organism to any change(s) in atmosphere and/or diet; because Hay fever appearing regularly every year the same day/mont (seasonal allergies) with Respiratory, Dermal and/or with general problem(s) . Dr. Qaisar Ahmed.
When we breathe in allergens through our nose or mouth, our body reacts by releasing a natural chemical called histamine. Despite being called hay fever, hay doesn’t cause hay fever and most people don’t get a fever.
Diagnosis and Tests
A doctor should examine patient, ask about his/her symptoms and evaluate the patient for other conditions, such as a cold or asthma. Advise allergy tests.
A blood allergy test measures antibodies to an allergen in a sample of patient’s blood (immunoglobulin E {IgE}). It can detect most types of allergies, including food allergies.
Also recommend a skin prick and/or intradermal test to determine what allergens are causing symptoms.
In a skin prick test, doctor places a small sample of different allergens on patient’s skin usually on forearm or back, doctor scratch or prick patient’s skin with a needle. If patient is allergic to a specific allergen, the area will become red, itchy and irritated in 15 to 30 minutes.
Intradermal testing is similar, but doctor places the allergen underneath the patient’s skin. Patient’s skin reacts in the same way it does for a prick test.
Allopathic treatment for hay fever
Several allopathic allergy medicines can improve symptoms and help patient live with hay fever (lifelong medication). These symptomatic treatments come in many forms, including liquids, pills, eye drops, nasal sprays and injections, for example:
Antihistamines
Antihistamine drugs (on prescription or over the counter – OTC) work by blocking the histamine that our body releases during an allergic response. Antihistamines come as pills, liquids, eye drops, nasal sprays and inhalers, for example:
- Loratadine.
- Cetirizine.
- Fexofenadine.
- Levocetirizine.
Antihistamines can cause drowsiness (Avoid alcohol, smoking etc. when taking antihistamines).
Decongestants
These drugs relieve congestion in patient’s nose and sinuses. You can advise decongestants by mouth (in pill or liquid form) or use a nasal spray. They include:
- Afrin nasal spray.
- Phenylephrine nasal spray.
- Pseudoephedrine .
Decongestants can increase blood pressure and cause headaches, trouble sleeping and irritability. Nasal decongestants can be addictive when you use them for longer than five days.
Corticosteroid nasal sprays
These sprays and inhalers reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms of hay fever. Side effects include headaches, nasal irritation, nosebleeds and cough.
Leukotriene inhibitors
During an allergic reaction, patient’s body releases leukotrienes, histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation and hay fever symptoms. Available only with a prescription, these pills block leukotriene. The most common leukotriene inhibitor is montelukast.
Side effects: some people experience changes in mood, vivid dreams, involuntary muscle movements and skin rash when taking this medication.
Immunotherapy
This treatment works by helping patient’s body learn to tolerate allergens. The doctor should advise series of injections (allergy shots or subcutaneous immunotherapy) with a small amount of the allergen (just like Homeopathic medicines). Every time when patient get a shot, the doctor increases the amount of the allergen. Over time, patient’s immune system develops immunity to the allergen and stops launching a reaction to it.
In certain circumstances recommend immunotherapy in the form of a pill that patient will place under his tongue (oral immunotherapy).
Homeopathic treatment for hay fever
George Vithoulkas wrote about Ambrosia Artemisiifolia or simply Ambrosia (Ragweed), “This remedy should be prescribed in cases where Dulcamara, Sabadilla, Wyethia, Aralia, Arundo or Ars-iod were failed, especially in cases of hay fever that start with catarrh and end with asthma”.
First of all, I’ll explain some medicines worked good in allergies especially respiratory:
Ambrosia Artemisiifolia
Almost all kinds of pollen, especially from roses with feelings of stuffed sensation in the nose and chest; oppressive pain in the left chest, must sit up to breath easily; awakens suddenly with pertussis-like cough (whooping cough); face dark red; eyes congested, smarting, watery; nose red, swollen; watery coryza (Nux Vomica). Diarrhea along with asthmatic breathing.
Arsenicum Iodatum
Yellow thick discharge from lungs and/or from nose, alternates with or follows a thin water acridic and excoriating discharges. Great irritation and tingling of the nose, constant desire to sneeze brings no relief.
Aralia Racemos
Violent sneezing from least current of air. Asthmatic attacks, whistling breathing, must sit up to breath easily. Copious, watery, acrid, salty discharge from nose excoriating the nostrils; soreness of the posterior nares.
Dulcamara
Nostrils entirely filled up, preventing breathing, constant sneezing. Profuse watery discharges from nose and eyes (lachrymation), eyes sometimes swelled and full. Both nose and eyes effects alternately.
Lycopersicon Esculentum
Marked symptoms of rheumatism and influenza. Severe aching pains all over body. Pains left after influenza. Head always shows signs of acute congestion. Hay-fever, with marked aggravation from breathing the least dust. Frequent urination and profuse watery diarrhea.
Naja Tripudians
Asthmatic breathing, especially with dryness in the larynx, suffocation, sneezing; with running of water from nose; inability to lie down; suffocating spells after sleeping; dryness of larynx. Aggravates at night.
Phleum Pratense
Hay-fever with asthma, Watery coryza, Itching of nose and eyes, Frequent sneezing, Dyspnea.
Ranunculus Bulbous
Smarting and burning in the eyes, Stuffy dry nose – particularly tingling and crawling, which the patient tries to relieve by hawking and blowing the nose; Sometimes this sensation attacks the posterior nares, causing the patient to hawk and swallow, and endeavor in every way to scratch the affected part (Ars, Sil). Itching in soft palate (Wyeth).
Sinapis Nigr
Hot, dry nose; either nostril may be affected alone or alternately; Oppression of chest, as if something heavy oppressed it from neck to diaphragm; Rattling, wheezing in chest, dyspnea; Eyes red, smart, burn and itch.
Allium Cepa
Acrid nasal discharge with profuse bland lacrimation is the most characteristic symptom; itching of the nose, Nasal obstruction morning, Violent sneezing from rising from bed and deep breathing; conjunctiva and nasopharynx, Redness in eyes, photophobia.
Badiaga
Coryza, sneezing, watery discharge from the nose with asthmatic breathing and suffocative cough; Spasmodic cough from tickling in the larynx, resulting in the forceful ejection of viscid mucus from the bronchial tubes, which sometimes flies forcefully out of the mouth.
Lycopersicon Esculentum
Itching in anterior chamber of nose, aggravates least dust; Profuse watery coryza excoriating alae nasi, drops down into throat, salty taste. Later the coryza is thick, white and tenacious, Sneezing abundantly.
Wyethia Helenioides
Itching of the soft palate (Arund, Ran-b, Sabad); patient must scratch it with the tongue. (Nux-v – itching extends to the larynx and trachea, irritability, sensitive to cold); Violent acrid copious coryza; Extreme nasal dryness, mouth, throat and pharynx with burning. Constant desire to swallow saliva and cleaning throat. Elongated uvula and burning of the epiglottis.
Sabadilla
Hypersensitive to odors; Violent, spasmodic sneezing (Stict); Itching in soft palate (Wyeth); Lachrymation upon going into the open air; Running nose; copious watery nasal discharge; itching and tingling in nose and soft palate; burning in eyes with lachrymation; severe frontal pains; dryness and roughness of throat.
Succinum Acidum
Paroxysmal sneezing; Dropping of watery mucus from nostrils; Inflammation through respiratory tract; causing asthma, chest pains; Itching of eyelids, canthi and nose.
Arsenicum Album for Hay Fever or Respiratory Allergy
Asthma. Atrophy. Bronchitis, Hay asthma. Pleurodynia. Pneumonia. Swelling and burning in the nose with flow of ichor fetid, and of a bitter taste. Violent sneezing. Great dryness of the nostrils. Fluent coryza; with stopped nose, burning in the nostrils, and secretion of serous and corrosive mucus. Cancer of nose.
Sensation of great dryness in the throat and in the mouth, which induces continual drinking. Accumulation of greyish or greenish mucus of salt or bitter taste in the throat. Shortness of breath, difficulty of respiration, choking, dyspnoea, and attack of suffocation, sometimes with cold sweat, spasmodic constriction of the chest or of the larynx, anguish, great weakness, body cold, pain in the pit of the stomach, and paroxysm of cough. The sufferings occur chiefly in the evening in bed, or at night, when lying down; also in windy weather, in the fresh and cold air, or in the heat of a room, or when warmly clothed, on being fatigued, on being angry, on walking, on moving, and even on laughing.
Respiration anxious, stertorous, and wheezing. Oppression of the chest on coughing, on walking, and ongoing upstairs. Constriction and compression of the chest, sometimes with great anxiety, inability to speak, and fainting fits. Tension and pressure in the chest. Stitches and pressing in the sternum. Shooting pains in the chest and in the sternum. Chilliness or coldness in the chest. Shivering, or great heat and burning in the chest. Heat, burning, itching in the chest. Yellowish spots on the chest.
Arsenicum iod
Burning sensations in the nasal septum, throat and eyes, sneezing and, initially, a thin, excoriating acrid nasal discharge. Worse for exertion and dry, cold weather and better for open air
Galphimia
10 out of 11 clinical trials for this remedy have found it useful in cases involving excessive lachrymation, swollen eyelids and a running nose.
Ipecacuanha
Sneezing and symptoms that if unresolved develop into a picture of asthma with mucus congestion and a spasmodic cough. Worse for lying down, warmth and damp weather, better for open air and rest.
Kali iod
Violent, incessant sneezing, worse on rising, a profuse, watery acrid nasal discharge, swelling around the eyes with a burning, watery discharge. Symptoms are worse from heat and at night and better for moving around and being in open or cold air.
Psorinum
This remedy is useful where there’s a blocked nose and a more chronic version of the disease. Symptoms are worse for cold and coffee and better for heat.
I (Dr. Qaisar Ahmed) recommend all in 200.TDs. Sometimes it’s better to start with even higher potency as an “Attack dose” after that in 200.
